How to disable generation of .sqm files?

I have a friend who uses Windows Live Mail, and he's complained to me that
it generates .sqm files. I believe these are Software Quality Metrics files
and are used by Microsoft for error reporting and monitoring of usage
habits. My question is: is there any way to disable the generation of these
    files and if so how?

    TIA.

Brian: if those files are indeed what your mate says they are, do they go
away (or at least not get updated) if you deselect 'Help make Microsoft...'
on the Options > General tab?

    I'll ask. Thanks.

  4. I don't see the .SQM or .EMF files in "Local Settings - Temp", both types
apparently being created by WLM in my WinXP-SP2 system, going away or even
being deleted by the "disk cleanup" utility. I manually clean out this
folder when I remember to do so.

I do not have "help make MS software better ..." checked in
    Tools-Options-General.
