When I set up a Desktop shortcut for a DOS program, the "Properties"
(sub-Program) can select an icon, but the shortcut itself as it sit on
the desktop will not reflect that icon. There is no changing of the
icon for the shortcut itself that points to this program. Windows
    Vista Home Basic SP1
    Any solution??

You can use some software like Icon Extractor or sth. Extracted *.ico
file will be usabe with editing properties of the shourtcut.

or You can create your own *.ico . For example open folder with dos
program. press PrtSc and paste in Paint. Then you can create icon.
