icon missing from taskbar

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Cambridgeways, Apr 16, 2004.

  1. The Windows update icon no longer appears in my taskbar when updates
are available. I have automatic update set to automatically download
the updates and notify me to install them. I'm not sure how long this
has been a problem. When several updates were released this week I
noticed that the icon appeared on my two computers at work but not on
my home computer. All have XP professional.

I am able to go to the site, download, and install the updates
manually with no problem, but the notification itself is not working.

    Verify Automatic Update is configured:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;306525

Also try Stopping and Restarting the Automatic Update service
    Click Start >Run
    Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
    Press OK
    Find "Automatic Update"
    Stop and restart the service.

Wait 10 minutes for the icon to appear.
