IE6 and IE7 broken after IE7 uninstall, System Restores failed

I recently installed IE7 Beta 2 Preview on my XP Home SP2 system, but decided
to go back to IE6. After I ran the uninstall from Add/Remove Programs, IE6
stopped working. All sites result in "The page cannot be displayed" errors
with DNS cited as the possible reason. I've also gotten the same error on
local CHM files when trying to follow links within the help file. However, I
can ping multiple sites and have no problems accessing the same sites from
    FireFox or Opera.

I tried to use System Restore to go back to a previously working point, but
this failed on two different restore points. I ran "sfc /scannow", but that
didn't turn up anything. I also tried reinstalling IE7 but that was broken
    as well.

I really don't want to rebuild my system. This seems to be some kind of
configuration problem. Does anyone know how I can repair my system without
    starting over?

    Thanks, Doug
