IE6 broken after IE7 uninstall?

Previous to installing IE7 I had Firefox set as the default browser. I
installed the preview release, checked it out and uninstalled it. Now when I
open IE6 and type an address into the address bar or even load a URL through
the Favorites menu it is launched in Firefox- IE6 has been totally cut off!
This is a big problem; has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on how to fix
    it?

Oh, and I hate the ClearType thing too... it gave me a headache.

A1. First check [Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access
    and Defaults > Browser.

A2. ClearType (in the browser) can be disabled via Tools > Internet Options

I've installed and uninstalled IE7 B2 3 times so far with no problems at all.
After the uninstall IE6 worked just fine as before. I'm also running
Firefox 1.5 and it has began to crash about 3 times a day for a reason
    unknown to me.

Thanks, PA Bear... already tried that though. It's a very strange problem-
even when I had IE7 installed it acted strangely. If I tried to access a
local file, it would launch Firefox instead of opening it itself.

    1. Try the fix here (disregard references to OE):

    2. Try re-registering all of the DLLs listed in this KB article...

Still no go. Thanks for the suggestions though. The current association set
under 'Open With' for the URL file type is 'Shell Doc Object and Control
Library'. If I set that to point to IE, it breaks IE completely- if I set it
Firefox, it works as before (that is, IE opens links in Firefox). Registering
that DLL also didn't seem to work. I'm going to try reinstalling IE7, then
uninstalling it again and see if that does anything. It's been a looooong
time since I've done a clean install of Windows on this machine and I'm sure
it's not firing on all cylinders anymore.

Okay, I reinstalled IE7, let it become the default browser, then uninstalled
it and now IE6 is functioning as it should. Thanks for all the good
    suggestions!
