IE6 broken after Uninstalling IE7

Discussion in 'Internet Explorer' started by jenkinsjeremiah, Mar 29, 2006.

  1. I installed the IE7 beta was OK. I liked the tabbed browsing, but it
does not work with several things I need (IE Citrix web client). I went
through the uninstall instructions (add/remove programs, show updates,
    removed ie7 beta).

Everything seemed kosher until I tried browsing. The home page comes up ok
in IE 6, but when I tried browsing to a different URL it tries to fire off a
new browser instance and it hangs....what gives????

    I tried reinstalling joy.

I am thinking it has to do with a setting or something left over from the
tabbed browsing on the IE 7 beta...but where? How can I fix this short of a
    system restore?

there might be some 'leftover' from your previous IE7 install and you could
    consider this:

try re-installing IE7 and do a proper uninstall again...

it would also help if you could check and clean your registry with i.e. a
registry cleaner (there are many, so I won't advertise any here)...

    hope that helps

  3. You can get rid of IE7? WOO HOO!

    *Heads to Add/Remove Programs*

Let this be a lesson to us all, Firefox is the answer.

    But.. What was the question?

  6. OK, so here is how I fixed it:

    1) reinstalled IE7 beta
    2) went to tools -> internet options -> tabs, and disabled tabbed browsing
    3) uninstalled IE 7 from add/remove programs with 'show updates' checked.
this rolled me back to IE 6.
    4) reboot

This seems to have resolved the weird behavior with this seems to
confirm my suspicions that when you uninstall IE7 it leaves something behind
from the tabbed browsing that messes up IE 6, unless you disable it before
    uninstalling 7.

I'm going to reinstall / uninstall IE 7 beta again without disabling tabs to
see if it reproduces the problem.

Please make sure you post the results of you test here so we can keep

  8. So I reinstalled the IE 7 beta again, then uninstalled without changing the
    tab settings.

I was not able to reproduce the problem. IE 6 appears to still be working
    fine....very odd.

The same IE 6 problem is happening on another PC that i did an install /
uninstall on. I'll try the same thing there and post the results later today.
