Yes I did run the upgrade advisor first and everything was fine. I wrote
down the details on what actually happened but have been unable to locate

I found and tried a trial down to IE Doctor version 3.6 (build 1.391) at the
Microsoft Download Center and it seems to have corrected the problem. It
actually has a tab where you browse and select the location that favorites
reads from. It also helped some with the problems on IE6 but was not a
perfect fix so I reinstalled IE7. Everything seems great so far and I'm
keeping my fingers crossed that it will stay that way.

Once again, thanks for all your help!

  2. When did you install the spurious IE Doctor?

While IE Doctor may be listed among the available downloads at Windows
Marketplace ( and available elsewhere online, I
wouldn't trust the outfit that made it and sells it ( or the
safety of the application itself; cf.

Be VERY careful, if not hesitant, to download any free-trialware, freeware,
or shareware, unless it's from a source you know that you can absolutely,
completely and unquestionably trust. As you can see from the above, this
does not include When in doubt, ask here or in
    WinXP General newsgroup.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
    Great news & YW again.

I downloaded IE doctor on 5/3/2008. I checked out the siteadvisor link you
gave me and it shows a green check mark for IE doctor. Do you think I should
uninstall it anyway? I have to admit the name Microsoft Download Center
lulled me into a sense of safety and I was very excited to find a quick fix
to the linking problem. Thanks for the heads up.
