If you right click a hyperlink and select "Open in new tab" the browser
should switch to the new tab that is opened, just as "Open in new window"
    switch to the new window".

Actually it should be a configurable option
I can imagine a site where you're looking at an index of articles and you
want to open this, this, this, this and this in new tabs.
Not switchign focus would allow you to get each of those pages opening while
you're still looking at the index

It is a configurable option, at least in IE7b2. Go to Tools -> Internet
Options, on the General tab in the Tabs section, click Settings. There is a
checkbox to set the option: "Always switch to new tabs when they are created".

    Hope this helps.
