I recently ran into this issue on one machine, but no others.

I am running Vista Ultimate and when I go to a web page with a .png file in
its content, I get the little red 'x' instead of the graphic.

To date I have tried almost everything, including getting rid of temporary
internet files, resetting securities, reverifying system files and still I
    get the X.

The one caveat is that if i do "Run As Administrator" the png files show.

Im sure this is some kind of a config issue but I am at a loss for what to
    do next.

    Any ideas?

    Hi,

    Hello All,

I have done some research on this issue and it is not a registry
problem. The problem lays in the User Account Control (UAC). Windows
Vista only has 1 true Adninistrator Account which is hidden by
default, even if you create a new Adminstrator account you still won't
see the images. If you want to view .png images, turn off UAC. After
turning off UAC goto a site with .png's and see if you can view them.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix this issue in one of their upcoming
    updates.

Obviously, running with User Account Control disabled is not recommended,
but I haven't seen another solution.

Not a solution, but, another poster wrote that the problem started after
    installing Firefox.

    Hope this helps,
    Don
