IE7 Won't load, hour glass, white page, no functionality

    IE7 stopped working on my HP Media Center XP. Upon booting the computer it
    will either work as though there are no problems, or I will try to open the
    browser and I get a white screen as though it is trying to bring up my home
    page but the hour glass stays leaving no functionality with the browser.
    Eventually I have to ctrl-alt-del.

    How it started:
    - My computer would not let me burn a cd as it did not recognized the drive.
    - I tired doing a windows update and it fixed the cd problem but caused the
    IE problem.
    - The computer had problems and froze while trying to install Office (sp3).
    Ever since I've had problems with the IE7 browser.

    Question:
    Any ideas for a guy with limited technical skills? I can follow directions
    and use common sense but I don't have a technical background.

    1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
    IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

    Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

    Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
    add-ons).

    2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

    3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
    all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
    Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does,
    do NOT reinstall IE7.

    Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
    reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
    Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
    to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

    PA Bear,

    Thank you very much for replying. The problem does persist in "No Add-ons
    mode". I am very reluctant to reset the IE settings but I will give that a
    try. This sounds odd to me because I did not make any changes here but
    perhaps it was done without my control.

    I will post back with the result.

    PA Bear,

    Resetting IE settings did not help. I am very nervous about uninstalling
    IE7 because of the potential problems. Any other ideas before this major
    one? Do you think this may have something to do with booting the computer.
    As mentioned earlier, sometimes IE7 would work and sometimes it did not...
    lately just not. I did a virus scan but found nothing. Any other ideas?

    Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
    light and post it back in your next post by performing the following and also
    the System File Checker (SFC) sfc /scannow:

    Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
    later for this step to copy the error message on it.
    Open a run command and type in:
    eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
    click on each of these:
    Application
    System
    Security
    Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
    exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
    causer.
    On the Event error properties message you will see:
    Up Arrow
    Down arrow
    Two pages
    Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
    you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
    the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
    Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

    Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
    error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.
    Could you Turn OFF your Modem/Router for about 40 Secs or so then the
    Computer at the same time.
    Turn the Modem/Router ON and wait for 30-50 secs for the IP sysnc with your
    ISP then turn the Computer ON and see if that will make any deference.
    Or tell us more about your Connection and Protection software you are using
    on this machine.

    Thank you very much. There were a lot of errors under "Application" (12
    events) so I only copied the earliest (10/24/2007 and the newsest
    (23/11/2007). Please let me know if you need more information.

    Under System there wee also a lot of errors in a massive list so i only

    If IE7 was installed properly and you uninstall it properly, you should
    automatically return to IE6. If the behavior persists in IE6, do NOT
    reinstall IE7.
