IE8 error & computer freezing

I'm running Vista SP1 and tried to resolve this issue via e-mail, but the
response I got directed me here so this is a copy of my original email:

The problem I am having is that I keep getting the message that IE8 has
stopped working and needs to close. However, when I click the "close
program" button, nothing happens. IE8 doesn't close or freeze or anything.
It continues working as if nothing happened. So I'm wondering why I keep
getting this message if nothing's wrong. Or is there really something wrong?
And it's not something that happens with particular websites. It happens no
matter what site I'm on. I've had IE8 for a few weeks now and this has been
happening periodically since the day I got it. I've also had the problem of
my computer slowing until completely freezing to the point where the only
thing I can do is hold down the power button until it goes off. This has
never happened before, but has happened twice since having IE8 and I'm
wondering if this IE8 problem is related to my computer freezing problem. I
really like IE8 and would prefer not to have to get rid of it and go back to
IE7, so any and all help would be appreciated.

Another unrelated issue I'm having is not seeing any web slices. I have the
discovery turned on, but I get nothing.
