Running 8.0.6001.18702 at 128-bit, no add-ons. The program CONSTANTLY hangs
on a white screen when I attempt to open for the first time, or link from
Messenger. Sometimes I can close the locked-up window and then any
additional clicks since the lock-up spawn new windows. Other times closing
the window terminates all instances of IE. Still other times I have to go to
    task manager.

And the program is a CPU hog. My usage spikes every time I try to open a

Anyone running into this? Wonder if I can still find 6.0 out there....

Whenever you ask a question about Internet Explorer you need to tell us
what version of Windows you have, including the service pack number.

Do you have the same problem when you start Internet Explorer from the
    "no add-ons" icon?

  4. [I'll leave your "white screen" problem for Leonard but if there any reason
you don't have SP3 installed yet?]

One of Microsoft's cleverer moves. If you go to the update center, it
requires you to use IE, but tells you you can use another browser at the
download center. If you go to the download center, the only update available
is the network update and tells you to go to the update center.

I've been using Firefox for a while but was trying to give the new IE a try.

How do you get to that? Defensive? PA Bear asked why I hadn't updated, I
told him. Try it. If I'm incorrect and there's a way to get SP3 using a
non-IE browser, please let me know.

Although Firefox is the browser I use most often, I don't have a problem
using Internet Explorer to get my updates. I don't have a grudge against

I am told that the IE Tab add-on for Firefox can access Windows Update.
I have not tried this myself.

Not to get SP 3 just because you can't use a non-IE browser to do it?
That's laughable, and so are you.

  9. To update your computer via Windows Update, you'll have to visit using Internet Explorer. However, if IE
Tab add-on is installed (in FF), you can use FF.

If Automatic Updates was enabled (which I assume it isn't), your computer
would have been offered SP3 well over a year ago.

NB: Computers running WinXP SP2 will NOT be offered any further critical
security updates, Automatic Updates will cease to function, and Windows
Update website will not be available after 12 April 2010 until and unless
    SP3 is installed.

HOW TO get a computer running WinXP SP2 fully patched
[You can probably skip Step #4]
