I have IE9 on Win 7 and turned on Compatibility Mode as some page were
loading slow. But, the pages still load slow, so, Compatibility Mode
had no impact. What is the function of Compatibility Mode and when
    should it be used?

    Thanks

Compatibility mode is for web pages that haven't caught up to IE8 or 9 yet.
You can tell when you need it; usually the web page won't display correctly:
graphics out of position, overlapping text and/or graphics, etc. It quite
often looks like an early IE5 page (if you go back that far :) ). Normally
it's enabled unless you've cleared your list of sites, and unchecked all the
boxes under Tools > Compatibility View settings from the Menu bar. (If your
menu bar isn't shown, right-click on the top border and click on Menu Bar.)
