Interop: data between programs

I there a convenient way to do this?:

Program A requires input (of a number, text, or matrix)
Instead of an input, you put some sort of escape (DDE?) to the OS
the gets the data from another program's output.

FOr example, program A calculates the state of affairs in some part
you are designing. Program B will optimise some aspects of the shape
of the object given certain parameters.

The biggest time waster in today's overfancy computing is still taking
data from one program and practically hand entering it into another.

After decades of "progress" this issue has not been addressed much,
yet would provide tremendous savings in productivity.
