Ipac to Samsung i730

I am planning on replacing my very old Ipac with a Samsung i730 in a few
days.

Should I remove the Activesync 3.71 or just form a new connection with the
Sansung?

There is no need to remove activesnc 3.71 but you might consider upgrading
it to 3.8 the update is availble at http://www.microsoft.com/mobile

to cennect your new pda just establish a new partnership with it...

IMPORTANT! Install (upgrade) Activesync by installing from the CD that
shipped with the i730... this will assure that the i730 usb info will be
installed as well as the assurance of running an activesync version that
has been tested with the i730. Activesync 3.8 is not required for 2003,
and, unless it has some fix or feature that you need, I would suggest
_not_ installing it even if the i730 disk installs 3.7.1

all of your contacts and other pim data will transfer (warning, backup
both the outlook data and the ppc before you start!)

Everything in the RAM "My Documents" folder and below will transfer,
but no programs or their settings will transfer although if you
installed them using activesync, they should offer to reinstall. Older
programs will notify you of an os display difference, but should perform
normaly.

You will need to manually copy files from other locations and from
memory cards to the new device or it's card... strongly suggest using
card readers for this purpose.

I do understand your point about using software from the cd because it has
been tested with the device, however i do not understand why you would
recommend a reinstall/upgrade from activesync 3.7.1 to activesync 3.7.1 as
the drivers for the pocket pc is included in the activesync installation it
self. and dont understand what kind of usb info it is you are refering to?

please explain..

i never install from the cd's that come along with the device i allways
download the latest part but i guess that is more religion. never had any
problem with activesync though.

 

There is a key file WCEUSBSH.INF on the CD which installs with
activesync and simply contains the unique usb device identifiers and
then "associates" them with activesync on any future usb connect.

We have had several instances where the activesync download from
microsoft has not included new devices in this file as well as older
devices have been omitted.

Installing activesync from the cd, even if it is the same version that
the user is running for an older device, assures that the usb id for the
new device will be picked up, something that could be important for the
i730 as it is one of the newest ppc's and if the users current install
predates the i730's release, it would not contain the update.
