Iriver H10, WMP11 Problem synching

Discussion in 'Windows Media Player' started by Neil Whitehouse, May 25, 2006.

  1. I tried to synch some file to my iriver h10 using the new windows media
player and encountered a problem. I synched the files without any problems (I
thought) I didnt get any error messages on the computer but then after
synching, i swithched on the player and i found that the files had not
appeared on the player for some reason
Can anyone help me and tell me why this didnt work and what i can do to put
    it right?
    Thanks

I'm having a similar problem. Now that I have all of these songs on my H10
(WMP10), their organization is totally random and I can't organize them
wunless I comepletly delete everything from the H10 and start over.

Are you using the latest firmware for the device? If you are and are still
having problems, you should report issues with the beta in the
    microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player newsgroup. =)

  4. If you have non-US firmware, then WMP will not work with many iRiver
devices. See www.misticriver.net for assistance with iRiver issues.

The H10 will not work with WMP11 if you are running the latest firmware. It
will randomly fail at some point during the transfer.

Unfortunatly the documentation is in error. If I were to guess I'd say it was
written in hopes of a new firmware drop that would address the problem, since
that never happened updating to the latest firmware will not solve the issue.

I should point out that the problem is random and may happen on the first
transfer or the 200th. You may be able to sync quite a bit of content before
hitting the issue and you may never see it at all if you only sync 1 or 2
files at a time. The problem is specific to album art (which the H10 claims
support for, but never displays in its UI) and does not affect the shell
extension so using it to manage your device should work without incident.

One other thing I should have said: I can only positively speak for the WPD
stack itself. It is possible for Windows Media Player to have worked around
the issue prior to the beta release without my knowledge. Judging from
feedback I have read on this forum as well as others I do not believe this is
the case. I can say with 100% certainty that the WPD driver layer did not
work around this issue until after the beta released.

  9. <groan !> Thanks for the clarification, I'll have to go round
correcting the advice I gave based on that now </groan>

So if I'm correct, the users should not update their device - is it
recommended to 'downgrade' to an earlier firmware ?

The most recent firmware updated posted on the iRiver site did claim
to be an update, but I'm not sure if that was only the T10 it referred
to (can't find the link now, of course)

Is there anything I should ask punters to post here, if they have
similar issues - is there a setup log or similar which can be grabbed
    from the iRiver hookup ?

    Cheers - Neil

"So if I'm correct, the users should not update their device - is it

It's seldom a bad idea to upgrade firmware, it just won't help in this case.
I honestly can't remember if earlier versions of the H10 firmware exposed
this problem or not. I know that it would happen at least as far back as
2.21, but I have a suspicion that firmware prior to this point won't show the
    problem.

"The most recent firmware updated posted on the iRiver site did claim to be

They updated all of their firmware to work better with WMP11 aside from the
    H10. (So the U10, T10, T20, T30 have all been updated.)

"Is there anything I should ask punters to post here, if they have similar
issues - is there a setup log or similar which can be grabbed from the iRiver
    hookup."

It will vary case by case. If they have problems getting their device
installed, the wmsetup.log will usually tell why. Situtations where the
device hangs are difficult to diagnose remotly. (I know that answer sucks,
but by RTM we will have event logging for the most common failures.)
