    Unfortunately, this is not going to free you of the "tyranny" of ICANN or
    Godaddy any more than you can with or without your own DNS server. That is,
    unless you start your own Internet Root and Registrar. There are already
    other Roots to use, most of which, if not all, include the ICANN Root. ICANN
    owns the Authority for the Root that most TLDs (Top Level Domains) such as
    the gTLD's, com, net, org, etc. and the ccTLDs (us, uk, au, etc.) are in.
    There are other Roots that contain many other TLDs, but if you want to
    access the gTLD's or the ccTLD's you have to come back to the ICANN Root. As
    for as GoDaddy goes, they are just one of dozens of registrars given
    authority to sell registration rights to names in the gTLD's and a few of
    the ccTLD's.
