is BackOffice Server 2000 the same as Small Business Server 2000?

I'm dealing with a small site that setup Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000
about 6 years ago. Its a single forest, single site, single domain (2 dcs).
Exchange 2000, SQL 2000, and ISA 2000 are being utilized amongst 4 different
servers. We now have new server hardware and purchased Windows Server 2003
Standard Edition to go with them. I intended to upgrade the domain to
windows 2003 by using the new servers, adding additional domain controller
in existing 2000 domain, transfering all the FSMO roles to the new server,
then demoting the existing servers back to member servers, leaving only the
2003 dcs left at which point I would raise the forest and domain functional

I just started to go through information to make sure I could do this and
came across information about not being able to upgrade an SBS 2000 active
directory to a windows 2003 active directory?

this same article has a link about ways *to* do it, but upon a quick review
it appeared to only be for upgrading *to* SBS 2003...

    1) is BackOffice Server 2000 same as SBS 2000? which I assume means this
    issue will apply to me.
    2) anyone have good information on how to handle this?

They were 2 separate products and then the BackOffice line was terminated. I
don't think the restriction mentioned applies since you really have Windows
2000 Server not SBS 2000 to deal with. Perhaps someone who remembers BO 2000
    better will also chime in.

thanks for the reply Steve. I tried to word better and reposted in the
backoffice.smallbiz2000 group, since that was the closest one I could find
to BO 2000. Subject starts "will this work?" if your interested, not that I
think I said anything different that would change your reply.. just hoping
it was a more specifc group (older version of SBS a little closer to the BO
    2k days I'm hoping)

also hoping your right! thanks again.

  4. SBS 2000 is very, very different from BackOffice 2000.
None of the limitations/restrictions which apply to SBS 2000 apply to
    BackOffice 2000
