Is it just me or is WinDVD Creator just about worthless?

Discussion in 'Windows Media Center' started by Ed Hansberry, MS-MVP/Mobile Devices, Feb 25, 2004.

  1. I am trying to edit and burn a TV show (dvr-ms) and WinDVD keeps
locking up in edit mode. Tried using DVR Edit and while that worked
great from an editing standpoint, the DVD created was junk. It stopped
playing after 9-10 minutes into it, so I thought I'd try it 100% from
within WinDVD Creator thinking maybe DVR Edit messed something in the
    format up.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I just want
to crop commercials and burn this show.

  2. Burning shows edited with DVR Edit doesn't seem to always work right (MyDVD
4 and below crashes and I have had similar problems with WinDVD Creator).

  3. I can't even reliably edit the raw dvr-ms file with WinDVD 2 Creator.
It keeps locking up. There are also scenes during editing that appear
to get the audio way out of sync (2-3 seconds) with the video.

I've found that some recordings just seem to be somehow
    "corrupt".

    I've ripped many DVR-MS files with DVR-Ripper, then re-encoded
the MPEG with TMPGEnc Plus, with no problems. Every once in a
while however, I get a file that causes DVR-Ripper to hang
before the multiplexing operation is complete.

And if I try to import that MPEG file (or the individual MPEG
A/V streams) into TMPGEnc, it gives me an error message that
says the file is not a valid MPEG stream. Similarly, if I tried
using MyDVD to do the conversion, the output file would have
    audio sync problems.

  5. I am thinking this is the dvr-ms format. Grrrr....

I know the guy that wrote DVR-Edit is working on converting dvr-ms to
AVI. Maybe I'll wait until that comes out to burn shows to DVD.

In the mean time, I need to play with WMV files and WinDVD Creator
burning before my trial runs out.

have you guys try PowerDirector 3?

That is the best program. I have been having problems like
out of sync, too slow, etc from all other program but not
    this one.

Been sucessfully convert over 50 shows not and still have
no out of sync, conversion problems.

Sometimes the program do ask to me install the media
center patch, but if I restart my computer, it will go
away. I found that as long as if I do not open media
center with power director at the same time, this problem
    do not occur.

I am running HP on MCE2004.

Try it and see how it works, o it even work with file that
    edit by DVR-edit!

I've had WinDVD Creator for about 5 months with no problems whatsoever. Occasionally, when I have 5+ heavy duty resource intensive apps/tasks running at once and I am capturing in the foreground/background, I will get A/V synchronization issues. Otherwise, AOK. I have a HP zd7000 MCE laptop. Awesome! The only issue I have ever REALLY had is downloading Windows Updates as recommended by Microsoft and HP, and having it "disrespect" my finely tuned machine. Best to leave well enough alone

    Only advice is
    1. In MCE, try capturing WITHOUT running other apps in the foreground/background
    2. In WinDVD Creator, test multiple shows, and keep a log to track your steps up to that point. Where in the edit process does the freeze occur? Clipping? Moving a chapter? Previewing? One show? All shows? Can you replicate
    3. Install anything else? Corrupted codecs
    4. DON'T run out and install every little OS, driver and app upgrade that comes along. Test and test to determine EXACTLY what needs to be downloaded to fix your particular issue, if necessary at all
