From what I've been hearing from testers you wouldn't have to worr
about upgrading hardwares at this time if you are already running Vista
Windows 7 will be a little bit lighter on system resources

From what I've seen with it, I would agree. Having a bit of trouble with
sleep function and wondered if there was a ng yet. minor stuff. Win 7 is
/ will be a piece of cake. I love it!

One unnamed tester was running one of the previous stages with les
then 512mb of memory and an old Pentium 4 2ghz cpu without difficulty
When later working with 2gb of memory the performance value wa
    commented on favorably.

It shows that the refinement of the Vista kernel is starting to b
noticed. In a sense Windows 7 won't be giving you so much of tha
    "bloated feeling"

yes, it's faster. it's a bit like Vista on a diet. Still has sxs and
still chews up about 11gb, a few days after the install. Slight change to
the taskbar, etc, but users should have an easy time getting used to it.
As always, some will bitch. But I'll buy it when it comes available. I
waited for SP1 with Vista. I'll go with the initial release with Win7.

The 64bit beta version installed like lightning here once booting of
of the dvd burned. It certainly sees less clutter when unpacking setu
    files onto the hard drive

On the other hand downloading the 32bit version has been a major tas
since you may get as far as 574mb and the download drops off due to th
heavy volume on the MS servers. It took a full day for the 64bit releas
which saw a steady download and was simply timed out at 90% a few times
    :confused

My 32bit came as a genuine from torrent, with key, good to Aug 1, 09

I don't play with 64 bit because application software just isn't there yet
    - would be lovely if it were! but a lot of the probs I see are specificaly
    on 64bit systems...

I was unable to d/l from MS because I didn't know the "trick" - use IE, not
FF for the d/l. If I'm bored, I'll try that on tech net today... just
checked - nope, not working at the moment. I'll keep trying. They are
giving out keys like crazy, but I'm guessing it'a only a 30 day build.
don't know if it's rearmable. (lovely set ov very bad trojans under the
label of 7PP on the torrents - heehee - I use Avast, but KNOW WHAT YOU ARE
    DOING!!! heehee

Good to hear about the 64 bit one - yeah I bet it would fly!!! We've got
all this great hardware under the hood, and very little to use it...

As to my own build, I succeeded in locking it up yesterday - could boot to
safe, but not to desktop. Probably after installing Sunbelt firewall. And
I hadn't made an Acronis image of it yet... Live and learn!!! I'll
    rebuild it sometime this week.

    Just tried the d/l again and it's going - it's honking - 2.3 mb/s
When you first try it under IE, it will ask you to install a download
manager from Akamai - do so, then try download again. If it just flashes
back, wait a few whatevers and click download again - until the save screen
comes up - point to a partition and directory and let it go!

The beta experience page appeared late there. When going for the 32bi
beta I kept getting timed out until the download manager appeared alon
with the download link finally seen on the Windows 7 page at 'Welcom
    to Windows 7' (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

Once you arrive there look for the 'Download the Windows 7 Beta
    (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx
"download the Windows 7 beta" link.

It certainly loads right up faster then Vista right from the start. Bu
besides being a beta remember you still will be installing a fresh cop
of Windows without anything else on. Once several programs can be loade
on that will tell how well it performs.

I suspect that many rushed out for 6-8gb of memory are going to b
puzzled  when they have a chance to run the next version

my current tale of woe - heehee - last install, my IE stopped working.
That was before it started locking before getting to desktop. Just
installed again, going very slowly, and it gave me a message that it had to
chkdsk files on C (Win7), and deleted easily 1000 directory entries. I had
taken an acronis image before that, so I will restore that and have a
looksee. My suspicion is that one of the add-ons to FF hosed it, but it
may have been Acronis itself. ANYTHING that adds services should be
immediately suspect. Remember that NONE of this stuff has been okayed for
Win7. It's all a bunch of hee hee, and a lot of giggles if it even works
at all. But it IS FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As to memory, I have 2gb - when I tried it with 4 it only used 3 and it ran
slower (course that memory was clocked slower.....). I doubt it will need
more than 2gb tops, unless you're running 64bit, and serious CADCAM stuff.
    Later!

So far everything that will install has gone on well. The only proble
run into was running the prebuild of AVG I have saved to a folder wher
7 crashed while running the initial system scan. I'm still trying to ge
everything on at the moment and will likely get on the 32bit beta wit
    more

As for the 64bit version there are no 64bit drivers for dsl here makin
that a short lived item not being able to connect online fo
anything(drivers, any updates for software to try out, etc.). An
I just got done adding a new pair of 2gb dimms in too

I'm back up again with another new install - I'm guessing that it was
Acronis 2009 that hosed the MFT, so I'm doing my images via the standalone
    cd.

I'm waiting to get everything on to see if the 32bit beta gets hose
again by something. I simply burned the dvd image to disk an
booted from that to see the installation go on. Make sure everything i
going good before running Acronis again there

yes! I have taken lots of images (by booting to CD), but I have NOT
installed Acronis as I think it hosed the system.

The MS Update for Realtek LAN may be bad.

So far, Blu-Ray (WinDVD9br) , OnAir GT HDTV, Puran defrag (done at boot it
gets the directories), OpenOffice, fireFox, coretemp, SIMeter, DUMeter,
Avast A/V, Lavasoft AdAware, Roboform, Agent Ransack, Irfanview, T'Bird,
Registrar registry editer, HDTach, TreeSize, Logitech SetPoint and
Uberoptions for MX620 mouse, etc... all work just fine. I tried IE7Pro
but it didn't save the tabs so I took it back off. I used a modified form
of Langa to remove a bunch of temp stuff. Gibson Reasearch Shields up
shows stealth. Speakeasy shows the line is good... etc

Gadgets does nothing other than buzz the HD a bit. nothing's there...

Yahoo Widgets won't install because it's not a recognized flavor of opsys.

Oh, be careful of Heidi Eraser - that may have been a cause of some
problems for me on a previous build. Like the hosed MFT

So far, on this build, very solid, very fast. No bsod or anything. I
    Like.

I miss having Acronis on the system, so I'll try that again in a day or 2
just after I've taken an image, to be safe.

Too bad you bought the extra memory, but you can always use it!

also, I had found this with a previous build - SLEEP doesn't....... but I
seem to recall that it took them a while to get sleep to work under Vista,
and now it works perfectly. Maybe build 7001? heehee

oops - SLEEP works fine if I uncheck the box in Devices / Network Adapters
/ Power mgt tab that says allow it to wake system. Duh! should have
    checked that first!!!

I see you're running Irfanview and OpenOffice there as well. I've bee
running AVG 8.0 along with the Wise Registry cleaner-1Click, Wise Dis
Clean -1click, Spyware Terminator, TBird, SumatraPDF, Adobe, Itunes+QT
WinRar, FastStone Capture, DOSBox, the Intellipoint 6.2 update for th
optical Trackball Explorer, even a tv tuner card where the picture i
greyed out for the time being

Some other tools like CPUID, PC Wizard 2008, IE new window maximizer
ImgBurn, StarBurn, Nero 8 Express, and some others will be tossed int
the mix. As far as gadgets none were seen when trying to select
Regarding the memory the pair was simply to upgrade from 2gb upto 4g
which hasn't been a problem with the 32bit build and still reports
little over 3.5gb total with about 33% in use

Thanks for the list - just went and tried Sumatra PDF and that's a keeper!
I'll look at others in there. Thanks!

Acronis TI home 2009 was/is not the problem - installed (twice) and works
perfectly. It may have been Heidi that hosed my MFT. Something sure
did!!! Things are fine now. What do you use for a file / free space DOD
security eraser? I need a replace met for Heidi...

For erasers or degaussers I can point at you a few retail ideas whil
many will simply look for a freeware that writes binary zeros to a har
drive. The first link has devices for both hard drives and optical medi
as well. 'Verity Systems Hard Drive Degaussers / Erasers
    (http://www.veritysystems.com/degaussers/hard-drive-degaussers.asp?sub_category=HDD

For a retail software the WipeDrive software fits the role pretty well
'Hard Drive Eraser: WipeDrive Hard Drive Eraser is Department of Defens
    Approved' (http://www.whitecanyon.com/hard-drive-eraser.php)

thanks for the links, but, LOL, you're right - I go for the freebies.

When getting rid of a drive (I build my own stuff, so it's never "part" of
a computer) , the only safe way is to unscrew the lid, then go at the
platter(s) for a while with a hammer and chisel such that even a CIA type
with years on his hands could get nothing other than scrap metal. I do
have standalone bootable on CD programs that will erase all info, but it
takes a VERY long time to do even a 40GB drive (I've got 2 I need to
    scrap).

What Heidi did for me (free) was to give me a choice af about 5 different
algorithms and changeable number of passes, and allow me to erase just a
single file, or directory, or all files on a partition - OR it would clear
overwrite the space between files, and in cluster tips (one partition at a
time). I used a "pseudorandom data", as I did it often enough that if
someone wanted to get info that I had deleted, it would take them years.
That's also a clear reason to compress/defrag directories at boot time - to
get rid of directory information about deleted files. I do all that and I
really have nothing on my computer that I wouldn't mind simply giving to
FBI/CIA and letting them have a look-see. It's folks who cheat on riaa
that need to worry. I don't think even microsoft actually goes after
    anyone... But I live legal.

    I'll send Heidi a note.

By the way, Realtek hi-def sound driver R2.14 DOES work just fine on Win 7,
including the "environment" setup (speaker distances). I use 5.1 .
