Yes, you can purchase Word separately from MS Office. The current
version of MS Office is 2007. The previous version was Office 2003. Most
brick/mortar stores will have Office (or Word) 2007 now but you can
still order the older version online from places like Amazon and NewEgg.
Both Office 2003 and Office 2007 work with Vista.

  3. If cost is an issue, you might look into OpenOffice, which is a Office
compatible open source application. It works great, and also has a
spreadsheet program, if you need it.

You can do a custom install with Office to install only Word, and you
can pick it up off eBay for fairly cheap.

  4. A while back I purchased Word 2000 on ebay, since it
serves my needs. So far it installs and runs fine under
Vista Ultimate (32 bit), haven't seen any problems.

People have reported in this newsgroup that Office 97 also works fine under
    Vista.

  6. If you are thinking of Microsoft WORD word processor then I believe the
best bang per buck is to buy the Microsoft Works Suite 200X -- this
includes a full version of MS WORD (in Works Suite 2006 that I have it
is WORD XP) as well as a whole bunch of the Works applications --
spreadsheet etc -- as well as several CDs of things like Streets &
    Trips, Encarta, Money .....

Reckon on $80 top but keep an eye on the sales flyers or on
    www.salescircular.com

I have it installed under VISTA as well as on XP and it works fine for
    what I've tried so far.
