When I install this update I get an error message saying that it can not be
installed. I forget what it said exactly, but it said if I don't have
windows streaming media installed don't worry about it. Well if I don't have
it installed, how am I going to get rid of it when I go to the windows update
website or is the solution at this point to just let it go?

I would be glad to hear of better solutions, but I have
found seen this on Windows 2000 server systems where
Windows Media Services were once installed, but where
it was uninstalled incompletely (or just rudely deleted
rather than uninstalled). There are two (at least) recourses.
You could install Windows Media Services in order to then
gracefully uninstall it (yea, agreed, excessive), or you could
look at the mssecure.xml file and see which of the trigger
items it is finding telling it that this is installed. (Run MBSA
and this file will be left in the MBSA install location).
The flaw in this last approach is that the critical files may
actually still be present, possibly exploitable.
