KB823353

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Chuck Le Mieux, Aug 14, 2005.

  1. I have an update 823353 that keeps repeating on my computer. The update is
for Outlook Express which I do not use but it wont go away.

Anyone know how to get rid of this?

  7. Yes the box is checked and all other updates are showing.

I guess this is a problems for MS to handle.

It's not a problem so far as I do not use Outlook Express.

    Hi there,

I had EXACTLY the same problem as you have. I say HAD coz I managed to
resolve it after 10 hours. I will keep this post short coz it's now 6am and
I'm a bit tired (for want of a better expression) after spending the last 10
hours on it. Basically, you will need to reinstall IE6 SP1, but I will post
a full step by step description of the fix for everyone to see (this is
appears to be a common problem) later today when I feel alive again.
    cheers.

  10. Look for "Why does microsoft update want to keep installing the same
update?" in this newsgroup. Maybe the solution is there.

  11. Hi,

If you have the security update KB897715 (MS05-030) installed,
it could be caused by that.

Temporarily uninstall KB897715, and see if KB823353 (MS04-018)
installs successfully. Then install KB897715 again.

If the solution by Torgeir Bakken does not work, have a look at how I
resolved the problem on my PC running Windows2000Pro SP4. The subject title
of my post is 'KB823353 & KB837009 Resolution'.

    regards.

    Windows version, please?

OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL are
    listed here?

It *does* work but you must install KB823353 and KB897715 not via Windows
Update but via files downloaded from Windows Catalog.

You still don't have KB897715, a Critical Security Update (MS05-030),
    installed, Burak.

    Hi Robear,

Are you 100% sure that both KB823353 and KB897715 MUST be installed via
files downloaded from Windows Catalog and not via Windows Update? Is this
set in stone so to speak?

Because although I used Windows Update to re-install both KB823353 and
KB897715, my OE Help About files detail file MSOE.DLL as version
6.00.2800.1506 and KB897715 is listed in Add/Remove Programs.

    Please respond.

Please see my full response to your reply in another post.

No, it's not set in stone but up until now it was the only way to set things
    straight.

If you uninstalled KB897715 and then successfully installed, in order,
KB823353 and KB897715, Windows Update may have fixed the problem.

The last time(s) you posted here, you did *not* have KB897715 installed.

What *had* been happening (mainly in, but not limited to, Win2K SP4) is that
Windows Update was offering KB897715 to machines on which KB823353 (or
KB837009) hadn't been installed. The latter are Cumulative Updates for OE,
the former is not and is dependent on one of them being present.

  19. I had the same problem that Chuck first reported. I uninstalled KB897715 as
Torgeir suggested and then installed KB823353, followed by KB897715, both
with Windows Update. It looks like they're both installed now and Windows
Update is no longer complaining about me missing any critical updates.

Another indication that the problem has been fixed, after *two* months.
