    I am migrating a NT4.0 member server to a Windows 2003
Enterprise member server. I plan to use the FSMT. The
help file for FSMT refers me to a KB829885, Distributed
File System to support consolidation roots in WS 2003.
The section entitled "Software Update Information"
specifies this fix should only be applied where necessary
but it does not tell me WHEN this fix might be necessary.
Secondly, there is no link to download the fix, just a
link to contact support which sounds suspiciously like I
should have a credit card in my hand when I call.

When is it necessary to load the fix described and where
    can I obtain it from?

  2. Hi Dan,

You only need this DFS QFE if you want to create DFS consolidation roots to
maintain UNC paths. So it's not really a "fix" but new functionality. The
File Server Migration Toolkit requires this hotfix to enable support for
consolidation roots; the KB also describes a way to create consolidation
roots manually, but the toolkit is the easier route.

The downside is that we cannot provide a link to the hotfix itself; you have
to call PSS to obtain it. You should not be charged for requesting this
    hotfix--just let them know the KB/hotfix #.
