(editorial comment heh heh - I'm not sure if one has to "fix" this problem.
Maybe all that's needed is to set this particular update to never show again.
Unless you live down under, in which case you *do* want to fix the fix.
Personally, it bugged me enough so I looked and looked until I found "unk"s
    posting - GREAT JOB!))

I will try to explain what I did, hope it helps:

First you want to make sure you have a backup of your system (registry in
this case) just in case things go bump in the dark.

(this may look just a little bit different on your machine)

Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore
Click on "Create a restore point" then next; you may type in a description
like "before trying to fix stupid Windows Update bug" then "Create" and
    "close" when completed.

So if things go bad, you can always follow this same procedure but choose
    "Restore to an earlier time"

Now that we are all safe,

Click on "start" then on "run"
In the popup type in REGEDIT and click on OK
This will run the "Registry Editor"
"maximize" "Registry Editor" to full screen, then highlight - click once on
it - "My Computer" - very first entry
Then "Edit" then "Find" and in the "Find" box type in KB912475
    Click on "Find next"
When the editor finds any entry containing KB912475 it will stop with
    the entry highlighted.
Press <delete>, and after that press Function 3 (find again) or "Edit" "Find
    Next"
Delete the next entry and keep repeating until no more entries are found.
Close the Registry Editor and repeat the process one more time, just to make
sure you did not miss anything. If any entries get found, delete them.

After you close Registry Editor the second time, click on the link in
"UNK"'s instructions - the one that says reinstall KB912475
    <http://au.download.windowsupdate.co...3-x86-ENU_0b878456f894ef07b7ff5db899d851d.exe>

and click on "run" and follow instructions to run the update. May need to
clock on top of the Internet explorer bar to "allow download" etc.

Once this is all done, *then* you can go to Windows Update and install
    KB913670.

    Good luck!

Thanks for this so much! The update nag prompt was starting to get really
annoying, which I suppose is it's purpose...:) Didn't have to go the regedit
route, and the update worked perfectly.

    "All u had to do..."
That's what I tell *my* clients.
Never ran into a Windows Update problem (really, no joke here), so I'm not
exactly conversant with all that "stuff". And I think of myself as able to
work my way out of just about any swamp ;-)
Of course, I found "unk"s solution, so I can add another feather in my cap -
    problem fixed!!!!

  6. Full disclosure: I have a non-standard setup for Zip files, so I am
writing the instructions below from memory. I too am a senior
citizen, so you can guess what "from memory" might mean...

Find the file named above, "$NtUninstallKB912475$.zip", wherever you
    downloaded it to.

    Double-click on it.

Select the command (somewhere in the window that appears) to extract
the file - probably "extract all".

Click on the button with three dots (it is to the right of the
default directory choice listed) and browse to - and select - the
    folder C:\Windows.

Click on continue (or it might be Extract), let the extraction
happen (sounds like a dentist!), and click on OK enough times to
    exit.

Run the install again and it should be OK now.

  7. Tomboy, you posted eight messages in about 12 hours. You need to learn
    some patience.

Everyone who posts in these newsgroups is a volunteer, reading the
groups when convenient, and replying when they know something (or when
they think they do!). You're lucky to have gotten answers from several
helpers in such a short time.

You probably think I am criticizing you.
