KB917537 loop

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Bruce Chastain, Jul 12, 2006.

  1. One of the updates released today doesn't seem to be installing correctly.

If I go to the Windows Update site, select Express, it says I need KB917537.
I download and install it. Then if I return to the Update site, and it says
I still need it. I'm stuck in an update loop for just that one update. The
    rest of them installed ok.

Anyone else having trouble with KB917537?

    Bruce.

I am experiencing the same problem. I am running Windows 2003 Server
Enterprise Edition.. completely patched up with this exception (looping on
kb917537). And no anti-virus or anything running.

Is there a solution to this yet? Microsoft?

    Thanks,
    Steven

Yes. I am having the exact same problem. Automatic updates keeps telling me
I've got updates to instal, so I click Express, install KB917537, and get a
"update installed successfully" message. Two minutes later, I get the
automatic updates notification again, and the loop appears endless.

  6. Does this server have a third-party product running which has locked asp.dll
    ?

  10. Hi,
I had three of July's Updates fail on 2 of three Win 2003 Ent servers. What
I ended up doing was remove the force reboot key from the registry (Windows
Update) I also found a pendingfilerename key and deleted it, still had to
reboot and then download and install Patches KB917537, KB917159 and KB914388

I found all the patches for manual download here
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...D5AE-4EC6-9DFA-D7A19DBA995E&sortCriteria=date

Then ran Baseline Security Analyzer to make sure they were installed.

Had to reboot quite a few times.

Note to Microsoft: I know I am not the only one sick and tired of monthly
server reboots, take a page from Unix/Linux and build patches that don't
require reboots. Don't say you can't, cause I know you could if so inclined.

Strangely if I go to "add remove programs" KB917537 shows as having been
installed when I first tried last night, it's just WSUS keeps telling me it
    still needs to be installed.

Judging from the log file the problem is with asp.dll, but that shouldn'ät be
    used by anyting except IIS.

I found stopping the worldwebweb publishing services prior to installing the
updates fixed the issues. That helped with the 15 machines i update manually
I'm still looking for a solution for the 500+ webservers i was hoping to

  15. The log shows that asp.dll was in use and could not be updated. You should
try shutting down IIS and/or any third-party application that uses IIS.

From your log, it appears that this 2003 Server was updated from 2000
Server. Maybe that is the factor in common amongst those reporting this
    problem?

  16. Same thing here :(

Unable to install (even after a reboot and running netstop iisadmin /y)

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB917537)
Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB914388)
Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB917159)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2006 (KB890830)

It worked with one server running Win2k3 Web Server Edt running .Net 2.0 but
failed with a server running Win2k3 Web Server Edt running .Net 1.1 only.
Maybe it isn't the asp.dll but rather the .Net version??

    HTH

  17. 917537 is an update to asp.dll. If your XP is trying to apply 917537, you
must have an asp.dll on hard disk. asp.dll is part of IIS, which comes with
    XP Pro.

  18. I know it isn't nice to reply to my own post... but now the updates are
hidden, only the software removal tool for July is showing up.

Hopefully someone is working on it :)

  19. Make sure that

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll

has full-control permissions by Administrators and is not marked read-only.

  20. Robin,

FYI, the server that failed for me was not updated from Win2k, but was a
fresh install of Web Server edition. :(

    Thanks
