  5. From what source did you download Vista SP2, Sorin?

Is a beta or RC build of Vista SP2 still installed?

Since Vista SP2 hasn't been released to Windows Update yet, we really don't
    have any resources for you.

I have been having the same problem with KB955430.
It gets to 51% when installing and then stops, with a quad core 6600
    running at about 40% usage!!
Going through the get help process with a Microsoft Rep via email, ended up
    in hiding the update.
    Not realy a fix !!

Hi, could you confirm that when it fails, it is repeatedly readin

    ::C:\Windows\servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000:
::If you have Vista SP1, which you installed (rather than th
manufacturer) I'd be really grateful if you could send me a copy of th
content of that folder.. especially if you have succeeded in installin
    KB955430.:
::I've gone thru several iterations with MS update support, but the
keep suggesting silly things, like \"install SP2\". But you can't unti
    you install this update! Etc..:
You can use Sysinternals Process Monitor to check that

Could you also say whether your Vista came pre-installed with SP1, o
    whether you installed it yourself

One theory (guess) I have is KB955430 can't cope with a streamline
install with no add-remove for SP1

    Solution - KB955430 hangs

    KB955430 / SP2 hang indefinitely at about 90%

The solution: A bit of reverse logic.

Process Monitor shows KB955430 apparently looking for more files in
    C:\Windows\Servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000.

    How to fix this.
    Delete folder 6.0.6001.18000.
(It has to be done during boot, so you need a utility to do that).

Then, restart, launch KB955430 or SP2 which includes that at the start- hey presto - success.

    So: the back story:

When you buy a PC with Vista pre-installed, (some) manufacturers include this folder.
KB955430 has a bug. If it sees that folder it goes into an infinite loop.

I assume if SP1 were installed 'normally' the folder would not exist.

I have advised MS update escalation support.

  14. What is the utility to use in deleting the 6.0.6001.18000 directory during
    boot?

Well, I have had enough of this; I am going to go to a torrent site and download a working pirated version of Windows 7 to upgrade (Yeah, I hear you Microsoft--it's illegal, but as you can't or won't take care of a product I bought, that isn't even that OLD, I will have to resort to pirated software). because I have had enough of reading these forums regarding Vista. It was a lousy system to begin with. I taught computer skills class in seven US states (Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, Iowa) for a small computer education company. I have vast experience trouble shooting computer software and hardware. I lived in mainland China from 2001 to 2006 and serviced expatriate computer systems for people from ALL OVER THE WORLD. I can tell you I have never, NEVER experienced such lousy support for ANY vendor,EVER.
