MU says this is an XP update after I scan.....Maybe that is why it won't
    install...

  7. It is the way the news reader does replies. Unless I do "select all",
it doesn't do all of the text.
    Sorry

  12. 6.750: The file c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll is open or in use by
    another application.

can you see what file version that is and possibly reboot the box before
    installing this patch?

Also what permissions does that file have?

  13. ntdll.dll is version 5.2.3790.3959

Yes, I have persmissions as I am administrator of this machine.

I did reboot the machine and still got the same error.

  14. Later:

My SSBS 2003 server has version 5.23790.4455

    ntdll.dll is version 5.2.3790.3959

Yes, I have persmissions as I am administrator of this machine.

I did reboot the machine and still got the same error.

  15. ....

First you need to find out what all is using that module,
which in this case is probably just about everything that's running.
E.g. in a cmd window enter:

    tasklist /fi "Modules eq ntdll.dll"

However, the only way that this is likely to be useful for you is if you can
find an equivalent system in which the update installs successfully
(so you can have two lists to look for differences in).

See also my reply to another poster this morning, who is having the same
    symptom with a different OS:

    http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...484457-ec8f-449b-82b0-a984e5774f52&sloc=en-us

My only other suggestion would be to do some diagnosis.
E.g. see if the update can be installed manually with a /verbose option.
That might give you enough more information about *which* other task
is causing the blockage. In any case, you could try running ProcMon
to supplement whatever diagnostics you do get. Typically ProcMon
shows you the length of the write to such log files and you can then
fairly easily infer which log record was being written when by the pattern
of lengths of the messages in the logs. From there you can have all
the associated registry and file accesses which might have produced
    that log record.

    Good luck

  16. Something is using that file. Like Robert says fire up the process
analyzer and see what's holding the file open. Call into CSS support if
    you need help.

Meantime I'll check with my SBS contacts.

  20. That looks like the same log file.
I think /verbose is supposed to create a different one.
Have you tried a search to find out if there are any other
    diagnostic files being created?

    ....

Since the error appears after "Enumerating Devices"
one hopeful guess would be that the program which
is the problem is related to a device. Is there such a program
in that list you gave us above? I don't run SBS so I don't know
how much of what you listed is necessary or standard.

BTW have you tried doing the update in safe mode to try to eliminate
such extraneous sources of interference as drivers and services
that you shouldn't need to achieve the install? E.g. if you have the update
to install manually you might even be able to do it in safe mode
with command only. (I bet your tasklist /fi command lists a lot fewer
tasks then. <eg>) Alternatively, start in normal safe mode and then
just stop or kill whatever is running that isn't needed to do the install.

    Good luck
