X83 was withdrawn from sale (USA) in 2002.
    (according to the Lexmark site)
Lexmark says "if it's not on the list as 'coming soon'
then it will not get a Vista driver".
Sorry about that. I use Lexmark printers
and am waiting for the Vista drivers to hit
the download site, for future use. Fortunately my printers are
on the list and I feel for you not having a Vista driver.

If you haven't already done so, ?? perhaps a Windows 2000
driver (might) work. Worth a try !

I guess I have to go out and buy a new vista ready printer because my lexmark
is in the coming soon category and you cannot contact customer support. I
don't think I will be buying another lexmark.

I remember that similar story when XP came out!

On the subject of Printers there is an all in one Epson DX5000 in my local
Currys for 99.00 Euro. I have always liked Epson printers.

I went on the Epson Website yesterday to see if it would be Vista compatible
or if they had vista drivers listed up there and all they had listed was
24-pin generic driver 6.1a whatever that might be (to me it just sound like
a makeshift general driver and not a proper one for Vista) and there was
nothing under the software for it under Vista yesterday. Anyway checked
there this evening and they have added Epson Creativity Suite ECS _2.1 so
that weren't there last night. Maybe they are in the middle of bringing out
software for this printer to run with Vista then? - however alarm bells are
ringing with me because there is nothing for Epson Scan and the Card Reader
drivers when you look which makes me think do you use the ones they have for
XP or do you hang on until they have Epson Scan and the other software
listed under their Vista drivers and software section?

I emailed to ask the situation but they haven't answered back. So I don't
know whether to purchase this DX5000 all in one or not now. Its pointless
getting it if they haven't got proper Vista drivers and software listed for
it on their website - I don't want to end up buying it only to find out it
wont work with Vista or that they don't bring out the proper Vista drivers
    and software with it.

I wish these kind of companies got their acts together and produced the
necessary updates for Vista when the BETA vista software came out last year
so that they would have the drivers and software all ready to download when
the final version came out without what situation we have now with the final
retail version of Vista out and a lot of manufacturers haven't got vista
drivers and application software for their products even listed on their
    websites yet.

I'm amazed that X83 drivers will be coming out at all. I have had mine for
about 2 years. If they come out with drivers, I would say that's a feather
in their cap. You should reconsider.

I'm in the same position. I bought a new computer with Vista. M
15-year-old HP LaserJet 4 and 10-year-old HP LaserJet 1100 both work
but not my 5-year-old Lexmark X83 scanner/colour printer. Contact wit
    Lexmark elicited this response

"may I suggest that since the printer is still in perfect working orde
as you stated, instead of disposing it off, you might want to conside
selling it to someone who still uses other compatible operatin
softwares or perhaps to charity. We do apologise for the inconvenienc
    caused." Mary Ochien

You can contact Lexmark support at: '_
() or go to your country's Lexmark websites
    and make your feelings heard

I wrote a letter to be passed on to the head of the relevant departmen
requesting that they reconsider on the grounds of wasting planetar
resources, as well as good customer relations. I bet it wouldn't tak
that long for someone to modify the existing driver to work with an X8
or a generic range of related Lexmark printer/scanners. HP say tha
printer handling under Vista is not too different from XP

I wonder what the effective carbon footprint of Windows Vista will b
in terms of sheer waste and manufacture of replacement products, not t
mention the energy spent on communications trying to resolve Vist
compatability problems. Lexmark and MS have perhaps neglected to tak
into account the current world mindset re. environmenta
pollution/climate change etc. Seems like its time for them and man
    others to do so

Continued user lobbying does have influence. Without customers, an
their trust, companies cannot exist. If others out there have the sam
or a similar problem, I'd say: let Lexmark and MS (and all others) kno
    about it

    ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
I upgraded from XP to Vista and now my X83 won't work, just like your
blog. The originally drivers with XP were a pain in the butt to install
because they were not digitally signed and it took extra work to ensure
    things were okay.

My attitude at this point is to send the only message the Lexmark in
the language they can understand.....MONEY. I personally have bought my
    last Lexmark product.

By the way, I purchased a SamSung ML-2510 laser toner printer almost 3
years ago as a second printer for my business. It not only works super
but I am able to buy replacement toner (includes toner drum and toner)
for less than $35 on the internet. If I want a color print I go to the
Walmart photo and print a 4x6 print for 28 cents. The samsung toner is
spec'd at 3,000 sheets and so far have lasted over a year at my use
    rate. Goodbye Lexmark.
