I've been using Live Messenger 8.0 for a while now, without any problems.
But since yesterday I haven't been able to login. No error messages, it just
says Signing In.. and these two small guys spinning around and around.
I can't login using another account either. Tried to uninstall and install
the latest build available. Same problem.
Signing in to Web Messenger works fine though.

    Help!!

    Hey Axel,

I have the same problem. I found out that it has occured after the last
automatic updates. There were about 12 of them, mostly small. But I cannot
find out which one is the one that causes the problem.

    Hi JohnPaw!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I installed those updates too.

I just uninstalled the last 5, adressed with the date 10/06, but no solution.
I saw an earlier post which advised to clear the messenger cache. Have you
    tried that?

(I'm sorry if I post this response twice)

Do you mean deleting the ListCache.dat files in all subdirectories of
    %appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger?
    Tried that, it didn't work.

Please let me know if you get any response from http://tinyurl.com/ox2s5

I also have this problem. I have another machine using the older MSN
Messenger working fine. Two machines with Live Messenger are both not
    working.

I have the same problem too.

Its been like it for me since Wednesday afternoon :(

    I'm running version 8.0.0812.00

I also have tried everything, including an uninstall/reinstall, clearing out
the cache, adding entries to the messenger hosts file - nada.

I'm not sure that its related to security updates - I haven't updated it for
a while - I've ignored the 'there is a new version available' nag pop-up for
weeks now - maybe thats the problem :). I can get on fine using web
messenger, and using an earlier version of WLM that I have installed on
    another box (8.0.0792.00)

    Guys,
I also had the same problem with MSN Live Messenger hanging during the login in process, this what I did to fix the problem....

    1. hit "run" in the start menu
    2. type "regedit"
    3. Open "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger"
    4. Delete the folder called MSN Messenger
    5. After this MSN Messenger Live will login as normal.

Same problem here, started sometime around midnight on Thursday. Contacted
someone 3 miles down the road, same problem. I'm wondering if its a network
routing problem. I tried to do some traceroutes to login.live.com and I end
up getting time outs after a few hops. I'm in Georgia/Tennessee area.

Same problem here too. Tried all I know:

    - Reinstalled Windows Live Messenger
    - Disabled Bitdefender firewall
    - Made sure Windows XP built-in firewall is deactivated
    - Made sure correct ports in my Zyxel router are open
    - Cleared Messenger cache
    - Rebooted of both Windows XP and router
    - Installed all updates from http://update.microsoft.com/

The connection test page under Options in Windows Live Messenger says that
all systems are go, but nothing happens when I sign-in. The "Signing In..."
and rotating buddies just hangs until I click the Cancel button.

I can use my .net passport successfully in the Windows XP built-in Windows
Messenger and also the web version of Messenger.

Everything worked fine the day before yesterday.

    Kind regards

Exact same problem for me! I cannot sign into Windows Live Messenger, it just
sits there saying "Signing in..." with the animating buddy icon...

I noticed i CAN login to web messenger, and then if i try signing in using
WLM while im on web mess, it signs me out..

So it seems the signin works, but the contact list never displays

I have tried deleting all cache, reinstalling messenger, same problems :(

I hope there's a solution somewhere to this annoying problem!

Happened to me AFTER the automatic updates yesterday (10/13)...
