Local User Profile Stuck in Status 'Backup'

  1. During the logon to Windows Server 2003 (member of a workgroup) there are the
    following error messages:

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile..."
    and then
"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a
    temporäry profile..."

In the Event Log (Application) the events 1502, 1508, 1511, 1515 are
    recorded (source 'userenv').

When you check the profile through Control Panel -> System -> Advanced ->
User profiles you can see, that the concerned profile has the status 'backup'
although there is no backup active and all previous backup runs have been
    successfully completed.

The backup tool we use is IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.2, which
    relies on the volume
shadow service (VSS) function of Windows Server 2003 to backup the entire
system state including the user profiles.

Does anyone have an idea, why the user profile stays in the status 'backup'
and therefore isn't accessible during logon???

  2. Meanwhile I received the following solution from the Microsoft support:

    cmd
Ran "WHOAMI /USER" to determine the user's correct SID.
Checked the ProfileImagePath value under the following registry key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<SID>
delete other SID´s, that were pointing to the same ProfileImagePath

Performing these steps solved the problem. The problem was obviously caused
through the multiple creation and deletion of the same username. It seems
that the profile path remains in the registry, although the user is deleted.
