Media Player 10 Kills Internet Connection

I downloaded MP10, but during the installation process I got an error message
which merely said there was a problem installing it and it might not work
properly. I can run MP, but any time it goes to the Net for a music file it
not only fails, but my Internet connectivity fails too. The only way to get
it back is to reboot router and computer. Even more peculiar - I now get the
same result when I use Realplayer instead, and that goes to the Net for music
files. I was able to play an audio file from a BBC site, but immediately
after it my Internet connection was again disabled.

I see the following issue on the MS support site: "You can configure
Microsoft Windows Media Player to automatically detect proxy settings.
However, the Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) file may not be automatically
downloaded as expected for the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) and for
the Microsoft Multimedia Streaming (MMS) protocol." There is a fix but with
warnings to only use it if you have this particular problem. Not sure if I
    do. Assistance would be appreciated.
