Media Player constantly locking up

I have Win98 SE with the .NET framework from Windows
Update installed. I am using Windows Media Player 9
(version shows 9.00.00.3008) to play .mp3 and .wma files
off of my harddrive. When I first open up Media Player
everything seems to work fine but, without fail, after a
few songs Media Player hangs and it takes a while before I
am even allowed to end task on it. I know this is
somewhat vague but has anyone encountered issues with
    Media Player lockups?

I have the same problem with video files. I view one just
fine, and then the media player freezes up (actually
freezes up the whole computer). What's the problem here?

I am using the same OS, and I am having exactly the same
problem. When MP 9 hangs, my system crashes. I tried
uninstalling MP 9 and reinstalling MP 7.1. This turned
into an even worse disaster, as I was unable to associate
any media filetypes with MP 7.1 (opening this tab on the
options menu resulted in a "registry error" message, and
the file type box went completely blank). I then could
not uninstall MP 7.1, as it did not show up on the
add/remove program list. What's going on here? Any MS
    help would be appreciated.
