When I try to install media player 9, I get a message that
says it can only be installed on Windows 98 second
edition, Windows millenium edition, windows 2000, xp
and .net servers. I am running Windows 98 on my
computer. Apparently, I don't have the second edition. I
want to be able to get music off of BuyMusic.com, but they
require media player 9. Is there anything I can do about
this, or am I out of luck unless I buy a more recent
    version of windows?

That's correct - Windows 98 is missing various support needed to run WMP9.
So a later version of Windows would indeed be required if you wished to run
    WMP9.
