Merging two Active Directory domains which have the same name

I have two windows 2003 domain controllers on separate networks (192.168.3.0
and 192.168.1.0) that both run a domain of the same name (companyname.com).
These domain controllers have no prior knowledge of each other at all and as
far as I am aware have never sat on the same network before.

The networks are shortly being joined over a VPN and I am unsure what will
happen when the two domain controllers are sat on the same network.

I assume because they have no replication settings or knowledge of one
    another they will not replicate.

    My questions are….

What will happen when a domain controller is introduced into an existing
    domain of the same name?

Do I have to use ADMT to migrate all the users across from one to the other?
Does ADMT work when the domains have the same name?

Can I manually configure replication between the DCs without using ADMT so
that they are then one domain as follows?

    • Companyname.com
    • User1
    • User2
    • User3

    Added to:

    • Companyname.com
    • UserA
    • UserB
    • UserC

    Will then equal:

    • Companyname.com
    • User1
    • User2
    • User3
    • UserA
    • UserB
    • UserC

    Thank you in advance

    Steve

    Denis,

Thanks for your swift reply. Just a few questions...bear with me ;)

once the second domain has been renamed will I have to join the workstations
to the renamed domain and then once the users are transfered using ADMT will
I have to join them back to that domain.

    - or -

Can I just leave everything set-up joined to companyname.com as this will be
the domain name before and after.

My concerns are the permissions that are on peoples profiles etc. I am
worried that prior to renaming and ADMT will be a
different after, therefore meaning that when people logon
to a machine it will see them as a new user and create a new profile rather
than giving them access to the existing one on the machine.

I assume the rename is necesary as ADMT won't migrate users from one domain
to another if they have the same name.

Thanks again for you time and advice.

    Kind Regards

    Steve

  4. Hi Steve,

I actually don't quite get what your concern is. But as long as you migrate
your account first and then migrate the profile, then a new profile will not
    be created.

Read the documentation and test in advance are always the right way to
    success.
