Our main music library is on my desktop, but my husband added new stuff to
the library on his laptop and now wants to sync it with our main library on
my PC. The computers are on the same there an easy way to do

  2. You should be able to store all the tracks in the network, assuming
it's a shared folder that each PC can access. Try WMP menu Tools ->
Options -> Library -> Monitor Folders, and add a folder to "watch" as
    the network folder.

You can just copy and paste the files in windows explorer, from the
    laptop to the shared folder.

If the laptop sometimes is and sometimes isn't on the network (eg at
work or at home), better leave the files *on* the laptop, but turn off
monitor folders for it's own disk or you'll probably see duplicated
tracks (one on the laptop, and the same one on the desktop)

Synctoy can be used to manage duplicates between folders :

You could also "rip" files from CD to that folder - same menu, but
check the "Rip Music" tab instead, and click the Change... button to
choose the network folder as the place to rip music files to.

  3. Do make sure that you have backups of all the music and album art first.

Also if you both have write access to these folders and different
metadata update settings then you can have conflicts over the naming and
placement of files. (This is not something that Microsoft intends to fix
as I'm told it's an entirely artificial scenario...)
