"Microsoft Update" fails on all Office products. "Office Update" w

    For the past half dozen or so update cycles, whenever there are Office
    products to be updated, "Microsoft Update" makes an attempt to update them
    but always fails (including repeated attempts). This time around it was a
    failed attempt to update Visio and the error code was 0x80241004.

    I have learned that when this happens, if I then go over to the "Office
    Update" page and run the updater found there, it too finds that the same
    updates are required and it then proceeds to successfully install them.

    My question is why does the "Microsoft Update" always fail?
    Can it be fixed?

  2. What Office version(s) is/are installed? Are you sure that's the exact
    error number?

    The Office suite is 2003.

    This specific case however is:

    Visio 2002: Installation Failure
    Error Code: 0x80241004
    Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
    resources.

    and that's a cut/paste from the update history log.

    WU_E_MSI_WRONG_APP_CONTEXT
    An update could not be applied because the application is installed per-user

    ....but I'm not sure what it tells us, other than the possibility that the
    failure may be due to the fact that Visio 2002 and/or Office 2003 isn't
    installed for all users.

    Are you running Office 2003 SP2 or Office 2003 SP3? Does the update (and
    any others) install successfully via Office Update? =>

    Otherwise, I'd suggest that you either begin a new thread about this problem
    in Office Update or a Visio-specific newsgroup or...

    Office 2003 SP3 is running and as I initially said, the updates always work
    when done via "Office Update". It's only "Windows Update" that chokes.
