I have a server NT PDC 4.0 with exchange server 5.5.
I need to do an migration to a new server windows 2003 +
    exchange 2003

I have proposed 2 solutions to the client:

    1) install a new server with new active directory on a
new server with exchange 2003.(different domain)
then, do a network trust between the two. run admt tool &
use exmerge for the mail box import.
this methode works fine because i have done it before.
negative side of view: we have to migrade every pc to the
new domain and copy his or hers profiles. (very long)

2)i'm thinking to lend them a P4 machine, install bdc to
    the existing domain PDC
promote the P4 machine to PDC while the other is demoted
then upgrade the P$ new pdc to windows 2003
when finish, upgrade the old server who became bdc to
    windows 2003 too.
once this is done, i take the new server HP zeon server
and put it to the domain and make him also a domain
    controller with active directory
then transfer the 5 FSMO roles to the new server from the
    pdc upgrade to windows 2003
then, i demote both old bdc with 2003 upgrade and the P4
    pdc upgrade to 2003 server.
then i have only one controller with 2003 from clean
start with no residue from NT4.0 domain. the only
differents is that the old netbios stays the same. Who
    cares!!
now ! thats where my question is asked.
how to i install the new exchange server in the 2003
    server.

option 1: should i make exchnage 2003 secondary to the
existing exchange 5.5 in the domain (bdc upgrade 2003
server).(before demote active directory on this machine.)

Option 2: should i install the new forest tree domain for
exchange 2003 and then use exmerge ???

regarding option 1: if i choose to connect to the old
exchange server 5.5. how it will synchronize between
them self. then how can i make the exchange 2003 server
to be the primary exchange in my domain so that i can
change my nat to that server (MX records)
i heard about metric and stuffs... but it is not so clear
for me. can anybody help me here please. the prohect is
    in 2 weeks.

positive side: don't have to change anything at the user
    level???

    Hi James,

    Thank you for posting!

According to my understanding, your upgrade project contains two parts: OS
upgrade and Exchange upgrade. We will focus on the OS upgrade in the
windows.server.migration queue. For the Exchange upgrade, please submit a
new post in the following newsgroup:

    microsoft.public.exchange.setup

Regarding the OS upgrade, personally I like the second option as it is
    easier and more convenient.

Your plan looks good and it should be a smooth upgrade on the OS side. Just
pay more attention to the following:

    1. Perform backup first.
    2. Different from NT domain, AD domain depends on DNS, please pay more
attention on the DNS side. (Use an internal DNS server with forwarder to
    ISP DNS servers.)
    3. Choose a suitable DNS name during the upgrade (do not use single-label
domain DNS name, and better use a DNS name different from the external
    website name.)

I have included some articles in Microsoft knowledge base. I hope that the
    information is helpful.
