Migrate SBS 2003 to new hardware

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by ImagineSystems, Dec 5, 2007.

  1. Hello-
I have an SBS 2003w/SP1 domain on a server but I'd like to migrate it over
to a better server without ghosting it or moving an image of the existing
server. Am I able to do this without completely re-doing the domain.
Basically I want to install a fresh copy of SBS 2003 R2 on the new server
but not have to migrate all of the workstations over to a new domain. Then I
will remove the old SBS server. Can I keep the existing domain intact?
    Thanks.

Using a swing migration (www.sbsmigration.com) works well to do this. It
gives you a "clean" new install while retaining all AD info so that
workstations don't have to be touched. Its well worth the cost.

Yep, Steve most certainly speaketh the truth! I did just this over the long
Thanksgiving weekend, and was grateful that I had four days, as I used them
all! I don't mind the "lessons learned" by during this the hard way, but I
would never do it again. I would spend the $$$ for Jeff's Swing Kit most
definitely. It is nice to have a fresh, clean install... and I fixed a
couple of other things, like having a larger C system partition, etc.
