Migrating an existing SBS 2003 installation to new hardware

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Bruce Sielaff, Nov 22, 2005.

  1. I have an existing installation of SBS 2003. I have acquired a new computer
to which I would like to migrate the existing SBS 2003 installation. How
can I do this while retaining the present configuration?

I've done this over dozen times with this method

Make a not of LAN settings

GHOST the HDD using Ghost 2003 (not Ghost 9)
onto another SATA/IDE drive (even if using SCSI)
(I would make 2 ghost copies! - IDE drives are dirt cheap)

Disconnect the Original drive (put away for safe keeping)
Boot the Ghosted copy on the original Server
Shutdown and repeat Shudown / Restart at least TWICE!!! <just do it!!!>

Transfer the drive from the original to the new Server hardware
Boot the system on the NEW hardware in DIRECTORY RESTORE mode
will take a LONG time to boot

Install motherboard, video, disk controller and LAN drivers
Check the LAN setting with original

If using SCSI - ghost the final install on to SCSI and remove IDE
    boot from SCSI - twice!

I would strongly recommend SCSI based RAID 1 as a minimum Server drive
