I am migrating (not upgrading) 4 servers (SQL, Web applications, File &
Print, Development) from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003 Standard
Edition. All are member servers (no DCs). We have tons of linked files,
homegrown web apps, etc. and I would like to retain machine names. I don't
have spare machines to temporarily move data while doing the clean
install...are backup tapes/files my only real option(s) to move data around?

  2. You could use a DNS alias to make clients think the server was another
    server.

CNAME, point the DNS record at your new server (providing your data is on
that server) and then you can rename the new server when happy.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do I do this?
