Migrating Win2k->Win2k3 ( Transfer FSMO ) ??

  1. Hi All,

A problem was arise when I tried to Migrate my one and only server Win2k
    to Win2k3. This what I've done :
    - Provide a temporary server. ( Win2k3 Installed as Additional Domain
Controller, DNS and Gateway IP pointed to the current server running
    Win2k ).
    - Transfer FSMO Roles to Temporary Server ( Win2k3 ).

Then I tried if everything has perfectly done and will work as supposed by
disconnecting the Win2k Server ( not demoted yet ) and connecting from
client. But the client ( Win 98 ) wasn't able to connect to the temporary
server with the error message pop-up like " Cannot find domain ". I tried
from the client running Win XP and it did logged in but it can't access the
temporary server. The only thing I've not yet done was to change the Defaul
Gateway IP and Preferred DNS to itself as I did with the Win2k. Some advise
it needs to demote the Win2k, but I really worried if I do so it will bring
    serious problem.

Any suggestion and advise will be appreciated.

    Thank You,

    Martin

    Hello Martin,

If i understand your right, the 2003 server is pointing with DNS to the not
connected 2000 DNS?Then DNS won't work properly. Change it to point to itself
and your default gateway. Even you have to change the DNS server entry for
your client NIC to the 2003 server. Then try again.

    Best regards
