    Hello,

i already look through the last posts, but did not find a solution for my
    problem :

we have SRV1 with W2000 Srv. as a DC (the one an only) and 20 Clients XP/W2k.

we like to migrate ALL (incl. AD, Servername, IP-Adress ...) to a new
Hardware SRV2 with W2003 SBS Srv.

But SRV1 need to stay online for a couple of days, but can have different
    name and IP-Adress.

    my first plan:
    1. prepare SRV1 w2000 ad for w2003
    2. install SRV2 into AD
    3. move global catalog and fsmo
    4. install dns on SRV2 (AD-integrated)
    5. copy data and profiles to SRV2
    6. remove SRV1 from AD with dcpromo and turn server off
    7. bring SRV2 AD into W2003 Mode
    8. rename SRV2 to SRV1
    9. Setup old-SRV1 with W2000 and new name SRV3
    10. Bring SRV3 into SRV1 AD

Is it possible to promote a w2000 server to a w2003 only mode ad ?

If not please give advice, how to solve this.

  2. Hi Theo,

    Thanks for your posting here.

As I know, you cannot rename the DC name in SBS 2003. So you may need to
consider migration method. You can create a temp domain and migrate
original domain to the temp domain. then offline the original DC and create
new SBS domain with the name you desired. At last, migrate the temp domain
    to the SBS domain.

In addition, I would also like to suggest that you post your questions to
    the following news groups:

    microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz
    microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000

The above news groups are dedicated to SBS-related issues. I believe that
you can get informative suggestions there.

Thanks for using our news groups!
