monthly report of daily network user logon

Discussion in 'Scripting' started by absolutmagnum, Oct 20, 2003.

  1. Hi, our Finance manager wants a monthly report
indicating, on a daily basis, those users who logged into
the network. Event Viewer with Success Auditing is too
messy. I guess that the best would be to run a script
within their logon script, but given the fact that I have
no scripting skills, am not sure how to proceed or write
such a script. Is there anyone out there who can oblige?

I'd recommend on using Microsoft's excellent Log Parser 2.x, which is freely
    available at It enables
you to quickly export all relevant log lines from eventlogs (*.evt-files)
and filter them as well. Combine this with find.exe or findstr.exe, some
small string parsing and maybe outputting all this to html. Or, you could
just write parsed data to a textfile or database, and create an ASP.NET or
..asp page to retrieve relevant data. Don't forget scheduling.

Let me know if you need further help.

If, for some reason, you don't find Log Parser interesting enough (not
possible) you could use WMI to extract data from eventlogs. Also, Windows
Server 2003 has a command-line tool Eventtriggers.exe that will enable you
to execute a program as specific events trigger.

    A sample eventtrigger:
    eventtriggers /create /TR "Test trigger" /L SYSTEM /T INFORMATION /TK

See eventtriggers /create /? for more details and additional parameters.
