Move from DFS/FRS to DFS-R?

Discussion in 'File Systems' started by Trevor Seward, Oct 5, 2006.

  1. I currently have a 2003 Standard SP1 DFS setup between two servers over a
WAN link. I would like to make use of the delta changes made available in
    2003 Enterprise R2's DFS-R.

Utilizing the same hardware, how should I go about making this move? Is it
possible to rebuild the current DFS/FRS root server to 2003 R2 then re-add
that server to the existing DFS replica, update the second server to 2003
R2, then go DFS-R? Am I correct in saying that only one server needs to be
    Enterprise to use delta changes?

    Thanks,
    Trevor

  2. Neither machine needs to be Enterprise if all you want to take advantage of
is RDC's ability to only send the delta when files diverge. If you want to
take advantage of RDC's similarity feature then you need an Enterprise
    Server in the mix.

You will need to create a entirely new Replication Group using the
DFSMgmt.msc console after you upgrade your machines. DFSR is not
    compatible with FRS replicas
