mpeg video frozen, audio okay

Many months ago I started having difficulties playing .mpg files from the
internet with WMP (.wav files are no problem). When I click on the link, WMP
says "connecting" and then I get a frozen picture but the audio plays fine.
I've figured out that if I again click on the link while WMP is either
connecting or already showing the frozen picture, then the video plays fine.
I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. I tried rolling back to
previous versions (I'm using WMP 10) but that didn't change anything. For
unrelated reasons I recently reinstalled Windows XP and assumed that WMP
would then work fine. The very first time I played a .mpg file it worked
fine but every time after that I got the frozen picture (until I click on the
    link a second time).

Anybody have a solution to this problem?

I meant to write that .wmv files play okay (obviously .wav files do too)

I tried turning off the overlay and rendering without any success. It
appears that my DirectX is up to date. I'll try to figure out if there are
driver updates for my video card. Thanks for the suggestions.
