Windows update does not recognise that this update has already been
installed. Running Win XP Pro, SP1 and all updates applied.

It keeps on being offered for install. I have applied it three times
    so far.

Any ideas why this is happening?

    TIA,

    Cheers,

    Guy

  2. I have just experienced exactly the same thing. I know that it is
installed, but earlier today I've deleted the $NtUninstall folders
inside my Windows folder (WinXP Pro SP1) and removed the registry
    keys inside [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Uninstall] which were pointing at the different
$NtUninstall folders. I was getting extremely tired of looking
at all the patches inside Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and
all the $NtUninstall folders inside my Windows folder. (There were
    24 of them).

After that, Windows Update keeps saying that MS03-026 (KB823980)
    isn't installed.
I've tried renaming the Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder to another
name and installing the update from Windows Update again after that.
    That didn't worked.

I've tried deleting the KB823980 key inside [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2] as explained in this MS
    article: <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109>. That didn't
    worked either.

I've tried coping the $NtUninstallKB823980$ folder back to the
Windows folder. That didn't work either but when I copied the
    registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB823980 back to the registry it worked.
It seems that Windows Update looks for that key and if it doesn't
find it, Windows Update keeps telling you that the update isn't
installed no matter how many times you reinstall it from Windows
Update. Right now I'm wondering why that doesn't happen with all
the other updates when you remove their uninstall information.

Every PC/partition (winXP pro) has this problem :-(

  4. Thanks for the feedback Paul.
I still wonder why the 823980 patch is the only patch that needs
this reg key(*) but I can live with it. Right now I have the
$NtUninstallKB823980$ folder inside my Windows Folder and the
'Windows XP Hotfix - KB823980' inside Control Panel > Add or Remove
Programs. That's better than having 24 patches in there, although
it would be nice if I could get rid of the last also. I know that
I never want to uninstall it anyway.

Perhaps it's MS' way of nagging us to install it?

Thank you for posting. We don't recommend making registry additions for
this update. The detection problem with update 823980 will be resolved this
    Thursday. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Thank you,
