    Hi,

I can use Windows Messenger fine for Video Conferencing
but can never get a connection on MSN Messenger. I have
a Microsoft MN 720 wireless router and use the firewall
inbuilt on that and the Windows XP SP2 firewall only.

My Windows XP SP2 firewall has MSN Messenger 6.2 listed
as an exception and it seems set correct (it set itself
automatically). I do not have Norton or anything else on
    the machine.

Is there a valid reason why this problem is happening? My
family members can use MSN Messenger on their end - but I
    am stuck with Windows Messenger.....

    Is this an SP2 thing?

    extra info:

I did application port forwarding on my MN 700 base
station for TCP 6901 - will that work/is that the
problem? Never had to do that with Windows Messenger and
I think MSN Messenger Video Conferencing did work about 6
    months ago.....very frustrating.....

  3. Hi,

Port 6901 has not been used in Messenger since version 3.

  4. Greetings Alan,

What exactly is happening when you try (can't connect, black screen, etc.)?

    Hi Jonathan,

When I try to connect with MSN Messenger either two
    things can happen:

    1) They can see/hear me and I see a black screen and
    can't hear them or
    2) it just won't connect.....as if its being blocked by
    something.

I have an MN 700 base station from Microsoft and a HP
zx5180us laptop. The annoying part is that I think it
worked months ago - it has just given up now - I think it
must be something with the router though as I tried it on
my laptop in Ireland recently and it did show the other
people and I could hear them..........but why would
windows messenger work and not msn messenger? Could it
be something residual related to 7.0 beta that I had
installed and removed when this started happening?

    Thanks Jonathan.
