Multisession/UDF DVD-R not readable on all systems?

I like the simplicity of burning a DVD-R on Vista within Explorer, from the
automatic handling of opening and closing sessions to the copy window that
displays very detailed info (such as mb/s throughput and time left). There
    is one thing though.

I go between home and school with large design files, and I have always used
700mb CD-Rs instead of DVD-Rs in the past. Now, however, seeing the speed
and ease of DVD-R burning, I just might use DVDs more often. Well, the
problem is that I burned a DVD using Windows Explorer, but it could not be
read on a WinXP32 system with a DVD-ROM. Then it couldn't be read on a new
iMac with interal slot load DVD-RW. This was at my school. I had to bring
it to a XP system with a DVD-RW and then copy my files over the school
    network.

Is all this due to the UDF file system? I'd like to know if I can use
Vista's Explorer to make my multisession DVDs and have it be readable on all
systems with a DVD-ROM, or at least know why, if it isn't possible.

    Thanks!
