I have exactly the same problem since I did a windows update today... Rolling
back the updates doesn't work. Webmessenger and the 'old' windows messenger
(the one that came with windows XP) sign in fine...

    This sucks.

    Fix it, microsoft!

I have exactly the same problem since my windows update today. Webmessenger
and Windows Messenger work... Windows Live Messenger doesn't.

Same here... happened right after the required reboot for the latest patches.
    Jonathan, your fix worked perfectly.

I have been having this issue since late last week as well. It happens with
all of my accounts from my work PC. The connection test completes
successfully but it spins forever when I try to sign in. If anyone has a
    solution yet please post.

    Thanks.

Two people at my company (I'm one of them) are also experiencing this exact
    same issue.

Has anyone made any traction on this yet?

Like many others I also had the same problem, tried everything but removing
the registry entries and the reg cleaner worked like a charm. The only thing
that I have been able to notice after the fact is in the connection help
(tools-options-connection) that when I wasnt able to sign in messenger showed:

You are directly connected to .NET Messenger Service

Now that it is working it also shows:

You are connected to the internet through a non-UPnP IP restricted NAT

So perhaps its a firewall related issue? I'm using norton myself and was
curious if everyone else out there happens to be using it too or what
    firewall you use.

I've had no luck either with WLM, I get the exact same infinate spinning
    buddies.

I've also gone through every "Connectivity" fix on the trouble shooting
    page, un installed, re-installed, etc.

For now I'll use Windows Messenger which logs in just fine.

Sans the video confrencing... Thanks for giving us reason to try Skype MS.

This also worked on a couple of systems at my office that were having this
    issue.

Thanks for the fix, and, wow...I'd love to know the root cause on this SNAFU.

  20. Hi Brett,

That's probably normal -- the additional info there is only displayed if you actually wait
    5-10 seconds on that dialog.
